Small Change Makes a World of Difference
With an eye on incorporating sustainability technology and practices, Twin Towers has introduced the use of a biodegradable hot cup in the Bistro. “This is the first biodegradable product used in our dining services, and we will continue to look for more opportunities to incorporate sustainability initiatives on campus,” says Katharina Schulten, Director of Marketing and Hospitality.
When the Dining Services team began investigating options, they wanted an insulated coffee cup that wasn’t so hot it required the added cost of a sleeve or winter gloves to handle. They were also looking for a product that would be recyclable or compostable. With the help of a vendor, they discovered Eco Products, a Colorado based company specializing in non-petroleum based dining service products.
Typically, the lining in hot cups is made from petroleum, which isn’t compostable, renewable or recyclable. Eco Product hot cups are lined with Ingeo™ - a plant-based plastic that meets ASTM standards for compostability. They also have a double-wall construction that provides both insulation and heat protection.
“We enjoy our coffee at Twin Towers, and these new cups have been well received,” says Katharina, “there are many exciting changes coming to our dining venues over the next few years, and we look forward to expanding our sustainability practices.”
