Avoid Boredom No Matter the Weather

Blog Category: Lifestyle

If you are looking to avoid boredom throughout the year, you’ve come to the right place. Here is everything you need to know about curing your boredom.

Why We Get Bored

Not everyone gets bored and some are much more susceptible than others. In fact, about 60% of people are hard-wired to be more bored than others. Psychologists studied those more susceptible to boredom and discovered “sensation-seekers” or “thrill-seekers” were among the most probable to suffer from boredom. This group of people tends to seek short-term solutions for their boredom and find themselves participating in extreme activities.

Surprisingly, on the other hand, some people never get bored. So, that leads to the question; Why do some people get bored and others don’t?

Well, it seems to come down to attention and awareness. According to this article, research suggests we get bored when:

We have difficulty paying attention to internal information, such as thoughts or feelings, or outside stimuli required for taking part in satisfying activity.

In other words, we get bored when our need for mental or emotional stimuli is not being met and we become restless from the lack of stimuli. Now, the amount of stimulation needed to satisfy one individual is unique to that person. Some people need very little and find entertaining themselves is easy, whereas another person might go to extremes to satisfy their required amount of stimulation.

How to Avoid Boredom

Get Outside

Go for a walk or simply clean the yard, but getting outside is a great cure for your boredom.

Learn a New Skill

If you are a knitter, try your hand at crochet or if you like woodworking, try wood carving. It doesn’t really matter what new skill you learn, just as long as you think you will be interested in it.

Take a Class

Similar to learning a new skill, taking a class is a great way to learn something new and keep yourself occupied at the same time. Don’t want to leave the house? No problem. Just watch an online tutorial and teach yourself.

Do Something You’ve Never Done

Whether it’s something as small as going to that new restaurant that just opened, do something new. Write a letter, cook a fancy food item, or find a new hiking trail. No matter what you choose to do, doing something new is a great stimulant.

Read

Pick up a book or magazine. Not sure what to read? Check out these spectacular destination books to take you on a trip without leaving the couch.

Clean

We can all hear our mothers’ voices on this one, but the fact is cleaning can be a great way to clear away our mental clutter. If you’ve been meaning to downsize, now might be a good time to kick-start your downsizing journey.

Avoid Boredom for Good

As we mentioned, people get bored at different rates and require more or less stimulation to cure it. However, the key to never being bored is to keep yourself busy with projects and activities that provide a source of mental or emotional stimulation. If you want to avoid boredom for good, keep an ongoing list of new things you can learn, clean, or read and you’ll be well on your way to a lifestyle of satisfaction.
