How to Stay Active in Any Weather

Blog Category: Health

Do you find it hard to stay active throughout the year due to the various weather conditions that change every season? It’s important to maintain your health journey, so here are some ideas for every season when looking for ways to stay active and make exercise fun.

Staying Active in the Spring

If you tend to hibernate and relax during the winter months, you may find it difficult to begin exercising when spring comes. Consult your doctor about exercising again, and be mindful if you experience allergies that could hinder your energy when doing the following:

  • Signing up for outdoor sports like badminton, baseball, basketball, and tennis.
  • Gardening and finding time for yoga and stretching in the garden.
  • Exploring the outdoors on hikes and walks in nature. Take your cycling classes to new spaces by riding your bike outside!

Staying Active in the Summer

As the weather gets warmer and sometimes hot, you’ll want to make sure you stick to your exercising. Apply plenty of sunscreen, avoid overheating by wearing light, loose fabric like cotton and moisture-wicking clothing, and choose the coolest time of day when engaging in the following:

  • Breaking out your bathing suit and hitting the pool for some laps and water aerobics! Not only does swimming keep you cool and support your physical health, but it also benefits your mental health.
  • Working out in the comfort and cool air of your home or a gym when the weather is too hot outside.
  • Exploring fun workouts and activities like hot yoga, pilates, and dancing with friends or a partner.
  • Performing yoga and stretches to preserve energy in the heat and stay strong.
  • Enjoying early morning or evening walks when it’s coolest. This is a great opportunity to watch the sunrise and sunset and capture nature’s quiet beauty.

Staying Active in the Fall

The fall months bring beautiful scenery and a nice shift in the air, making exercising more comfortable again. Some days are warm, some are cold, and some days start off in the forties and end in the seventies, so be sure to wear layers of clothes like t-shirts and jackets to accommodate the weather when doing the following:

  • Performing simple workouts and stretches to prevent your arm from being sore after a flu shot.
  • Taking advantage of those beautiful changing leaves and going on hikes and walks in nature.
  • Tending to the garden, doing yard work, and raking leaves to care for your home and work your muscles.
  • Getting into the fall spirit with apple-picking, knitting, and carving pumpkins, which get your body moving and exercise your hands. Just be sure to wear compression gloves!
  • Joining outdoor sports or tossing the football with friends and family as a way to enjoy the holidays together.

Staying Active in the Winter

Staying dry and warm is key to working out during the winter months, so wearing layers traps heat close to your body and insulates you against the harsh weather. Make sure you wear moisture-wicking fabrics and not cotton to stay dry while you work up a sweat when engaging in the following:

  • Going on brisk walks when there’s no snow or ice around!
  • Joining a gym, health club, class, or walking around the mall to stay motivated while in a warm and comfortable facility. You can also implement a workout in your own home to save on travel time and energy.
  • Finding an indoor swimming pool! Warm water can soothe the soreness we sometimes experience in our joints during the winter months.
  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, avoiding shortcuts, and incorporating some stretches when you reach your destination.
  • Playing indoor sports to keep your competitive edge going and activate your muscles.
  • Playing outside with the family or going on walks with your pet to get some fresh air. Staying inside all winter can be bad for your physical and mental health.
