Exploring Tech in Senior Living Communities

Blog Category: Tech

Technology has given everyone incredible opportunities to stay connected, healthy, resourceful, knowledgeable, and innovative. As we move further and further into an advanced technology age, we’ve found that seniors have become tech-savvy and are changing the senior living industry. Now we see that all sectors need to keep up with the technology wave to appease older demographics as well, and that includes the field of retirement and senior living. The following are some technological tools various senior living communities, including Life Enriching Communities, have implemented in their facilities.

Dining With Rosie the Robot

Do you remember the robot maid, Rosie, from The Jetsons? Now, there’s a dining robot in many senior living communities! This robot is a dining “associate” that increases serving efficiency, supplements staffing, and sings “Happy Birthday” at your special birthday dinner. It’s also programmable to learn any room’s unique dining layout, carries up to five meals at a time, and uses LIDAR detectors and cameras to maneuver around people and objects. The robot is intended to assist with the heavy lifting so associates can have a more personalized and attentive interaction with residents dining in.

TV and Computer Access

We’ve come a long way in what we can do with our televisions. Today, we can pause and start whatever movie or show we want, including streaming services. Residents are able to stay in the comfort of their own room while still pulling up the religious service in their community from their own television to stay connected and follow their routine without skipping a beat. They can also utilize their television to sync up with a video chat to better see their loved ones for a virtual face-to-face call.

With the theme of connection, now that more and more senior living communities are including computer access in their facilities, residents have the opportunity to keep in touch at all times with what’s going on in the world. Whether they’re reading, learning, researching, writing, communicating, keeping up with the news, or exploring ChatGPT, seniors have become more resourceful when given technological tools like computers and smart devices.

Lobby Portals

Many senior living communities are piloting lobby portals in the main entrance of their facilities for residents to use. These kiosks allow residents to tap and swipe to find out where, when, and what events, activities, and classes are going on in the building, so if they’re looking for a spontaneous opportunity, want to observe a program before signing up, or need to check that their schedule is still happening, it’s all available at their fingertips.
