Hidden Gems on Netflix

Coherence (Sci-Fi)

Proof that a filmmaker can do a lot with a little, Coherence takes place during a dinner party. Simple enough premise. However, things quickly take off as a passing comet creates a crazy scenario that none of them can believe. Though most of the action is confined to the inside of a house, once the premise picks up you will be left with the creeps in this baffling scenario.

High Flying Bird (Sports Drama)

Wondering what it’s like to be an NBA player in 2019? Then look no further than High Flying Birds. In this movie, we join Ray, a high-powered agent struggling to stay afloat during an NBA lockout. After all, if the players don’t get paid then neither does he. One of his biggest players, Erick, is broke and just wants to play and make money. The two under normal conditions would be rolling in money,  however, the lockout has them scrambling to make ends meet.

The Ritual (Horror)

Just a few friends on a hike through the woods, what could go wrong?

After the death of their friend in a convenience store robbery, several old college friends take a trip to a forest in Sweden to reconnect and heal. However, after a slight misstep causes one to injure their ankle,  the group decides to take an alternate route through the dense forest in order to find help. What they find is a haunting presence that seems to be stalking their every step.

Road to Perdition (Crime Thriller)

After his son witnesses something he shouldn’t, mob muscle man Mike is forced to take his son and flee across the 1930’s midwestern landscape. Thematically, the plot revolves around three fathers, their sons, and their relationships. Will Mike and his son be able to evade what the mob has in store for them? The answer lies down the road.

Fruitvale Station (Bio-Pic)

This film is a day in the life depiction of Oscar Grant the 3rd and the events leading up to the tragedy that took place in the early morning hours on New Year’s Day, 2009. To say any more may spoil the plot if you are unfamiliar with the real-life events that took place on Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California.

Chef (Comedy)

In this celebration of food, friends, and family, Chef tells the story of Carl, an affluent chef, as he is forced to serve a renowned food critic who proceeds to decimate Carl in a scathing review. As a result, Carl moves to Miami with the support of his ex-wife and son, to run a food truck. From here, Carl is able to start fresh with a new lease on life.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (Comedy, Drama)

After faking his suicide and running away from his foster home with his dog, Ricky Baker finds himself at the mercy of the New Zealand bush. That is until his foster father, Hector, tracks him down. Unfortunately, Hector suffers a fall and breaks his ankle before the two of them can return and clear things up with the authorities. Meanwhile, the authorities have found Hector’s suspiciously empty house and begin a manhunt for the two.

Ricky and Hector begin to bond as they try to find a way to make it out of the bush alive.

The Florida Project (Drama)

The slice of life plot follows six-year-old Moonee as she makes and loses friends in the hotel parking lot as her single mother, Halley, struggles to make ends meet. This film is a hard look at those who live with seeing their dreams just out of reach.

The Long Dumb Road (Adventure)

As the title may suggest, this film is a road trip movie depicting two characters that serendipitously meet each other. Nathan is a young art student headed out for his first semester when his car breaks down. When the mechanic, Richard, fixes the problem, they both embark on an adventure of growth and friendship.

Hail, Caesar! (Comedy, Mystery)

It’s a little weird to say that a Coen Brothers movie is a hidden gem, however,  Hail, Caesar was released in 2016 to little fanfare and has flown under the radar ever since.

In this film, Eddie fixes problems. Specifically, the 1950’s Hollywood problems such as keeping scandals out of the hands of gossip journalists. He is good at his job until some problems begin to build and Eddie finds himself in over his head as many of Hollywood’s brightest stars step out of line.
