A Healthy Daily Routine for Seniors
If you want to make the most of how you spend your retirement, you’ll want to establish a healthy daily routine! While we all live different, unique lifestyles, having a daily routine that fits your preferences is key for aging well.
The Benefits of a Daily Routine
There are many benefits of having a healthy daily routine that, once you start, you won’t want to stop:
- Awareness of time, your environment, and staying organized
- Decreased anxiety, stress, and risk of illness
- Established time and space for the people and things you enjoy
- Improved cognitive function and decision-making skills
- Improved quality rest and sleep
- Increased feelings of safety, security, and predictability
- Increased physically active lifestyle
- Maintained independence and social engagement
- Managed symptoms of Alzheimer’s or dementia
What to Include in Your Daily Routine
You’ll want to evaluate your lifestyle, preferences, habits (good and bad), and the ways you support the social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational, and physical ways of wellness. Include elements of the following to create a fulfilling daily routine:
- 7-9 hours of sleep every night
- Any spiritual practices or observations you partake in throughout the day or week
- Essential activities such as medications, bathing, and hygienic care
- Low, moderate, and intense exercises and stretches that can help you maintain your weight, strength, and independence
- Opportunities to get in touch with your intergenerational relationships
- Time to prepare or attend well-balanced meals throughout the day, including staying hydrated
- Time to volunteer and engage in your hobbies
Of course, not every day will be the same, so be sure to accommodate and innovate for things like:
- Appointments with the doctor, mechanic, or salon
- Chore days and errand runs
- Holidays, vacations, and special occasions
- Regular classes, clubs, hobbies, or meetings
- Sick days or emergency situations
- Visits with family and friends
An Example Routine to Age Well
Here is a general outline for a healthy daily routine you can modify to fit your unique lifestyle:
- Wake up at the same time every morning, ideally early, so you can go to bed at a regular early hour.
- Drink water and do some morning journaling, meditation, stretches, or yoga.
- Take care of your personal hygiene needs, including skin care, sun protection, oral hygiene, and getting dressed in clean clothes.
- Enjoy breakfast, coffee, and catching up on the news or a book before tidying up.
- Engage in a hobby or go on a walk, especially if you have a pet, because our furry friends need a daily routine, too!
- Enjoy lunch before tidying up and resting.
- Take a walk, attend an event, or connect with a family or friend.
