Moving Your Loved One to Another State

Blog Category: Lifestyle

Everyone’s journey leads them to different places in their life, so help your loved one embrace the move to another state!

Reasons to Relocate a Loved One

There are many causes (and benefits!) of relocating your loved one to another state for senior living:

  • Everyone needs peace of mind that they are going to receive a complete continuum of care at any level of living
  • It’s exhausting to handle all the home maintenance
  • They are socially isolated and don’t attend any events or activities
  • They currently live too far away from family and friends
  • They have experienced a recent fall, illness, injury, or admission to the hospital
  • They need a more safe and secure living environment
  • They need extra support or assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • They were diagnosed with cognitive or mental impairment, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, and need supervision
  • They would rather be a seasonal snowbird during retirement

The Move-in Guide

Even if you’re not with them for all or any of the moving process, you can help your loved one with this basic move-in guide:

  • Consolidate and declutter belongings throughout the year
  • Coordinate plans using Eldercare Locator to identify all available moving resources in the area
  • Gather all important legal, tax, healthcare, and retirement benefits documents
  • Get them comfortable in their new home and familiarize them with the community’s people and opportunities

Things to Remember

Depending on you and your loved one’s unique circumstances, there are a few key things to consider when moving to another state:

  • Buy appropriate attire for your loved one if the state they are moving to has very different geography and climate patterns than their current place of residence.
  • If you are not living in the new state your loved one is moving to, establish a relationship with their senior living community so you can practice long-distance caregiving.
  • If your loved one is moving to your state so you can care for them, get empowered to be more present in their life as a caregiver.
  • Talk to them about their finances and other legal plans to make sure they’re in good hands no matter what.
  • They will need to adjust or change their insurance policies.
  • They will need to cancel or reroute any mail or subscriptions.
  • They will need to establish new doctors and other services they may regularly use, such as a hairdresser or veterinarian for their pet.
