Blog Category: Lifestyle

There is always so much to do with so little time to do it, however, keeping your home tidy could be the key to better cognitive health. There are many ways in which your clutter can affect your state of mind. In fact, you should never underestimate the power of a clean home. However, when you become accustomed to living in a chaotic, cluttered home it can be very difficult to break yourself of those bad habits.

On the other hand, an organized and tidy home can come with many benefits to your mental well-being.

The Pitfalls of an Untidy Home

Clutter Creates Chaos

If you are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of clutter, your mind will have difficulty relaxing and the clutter can create more anxiety and affect your ability to focus. Which in turn can affect your ability to take care of the tasks that need to be attended to. So, to minimize your mental chaos, consider a weekly cleaning task to start tackling your mess.

Mess Creates Stress

Whether your laundry is piling up or the fridge needs some attention, living in a messy home creates a lot of stress. Simply because you are likely to fixate on what needs to be done. Picture yourself cooking in a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Can you feel your anxiety rising already? Be sure the environments in which you spend time cause you stress.

It’s Embarrassing

Have you ever postponed having guests over because of your messy home? We get it. A messy home can be embarrassing. Don’t let your messy habits affect your social life.

It Can Drain Your Energy

Your home should be your sanctuary. However, when you can never really relax and your environment creates stress it can be a drain on your enthusiasm and energy.

Tidy House, Tidy Mind

Now that you know how an untidy home can affect your mental well-being, here are a few ways you can freshen up your space:

Find Better Storage Solutions

It’s almost impossible to have too much storage. And it’s much nicer to have a place for everything so it can all be easily put away. There are some tricks to increase storage and not waste space:

  • Always store things under your bed
  • Keep baking trays in oven to free up cupboard space
  • Buy multifunctional furniture

Make a To-Do List

To-do lists help keep us on track and can help us conceptualize how much we’ve actually gotten done. The key is not to give yourself too many tasks per day. Split up your tasks over the week.

Do Quick Cleans Around the House

Focus on one room at a time as you move around your house, doing little quick cleans. Use your to-do list to prioritize the task into chunks rather than doing one big clean. Break up your cleaning by each room in the house.

  • Kitchen
  • Living room
  • Dining room
  • Bathroom
  • Bedroom

Change Around Some Pictures

You become very accustomed to how pictures are arranged around your home. One quick way to freshen up your interior look is to switch around pictures.

  • Take pictures from one room and switch them with another

Add Some Color

Whenever you think a room needs a little uplifting, add a bright color for an instant makeover.

  • Add some colorful cushions
  • Get a throw blanket
  • Try a new carpet

Add Some Plants

Adding a little more life to your home is a great way to freshen up a room.  Here are some simple plants to add to your home:

  • Aloe
  • Spider plant
  • Peace lily
  • Dragon tree

Keep in mind that all a little tidying up around the house is a starting point, so pick a room and get started today!
