“We want our residents to feel engaged and excited to participate by stimulating their brains so they can be as independent as possible. We have so many programs that help our residents to socialize, think, move, all the things that make them come to life.”
– Comfort F., Wesley Woods CNA
Participating in the Six Dimensions of Wellness leads to a fulfilling quality of life. Those with Alzheimer’s or dementia will have adjusted wellness activities and practices to maximize their experience.
Physical Wellness
The Physical dimension of wellness includes a well-balanced diet, exercise, sleep, reduced risk of illness, and maintaining our highest degree of independence. Physical wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- Activities of daily living (ADLs) are broken down into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Fun music is incorporated into exercises.
- Loved ones attend physical therapy to adapt fitness routines to be safe and gentle.
Social Wellness
The Social dimension of wellness is the ability to relate to and connect with friends, family, and even strangers. Social wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- Loved ones attend speech therapy to enhance communication skills.
- You and your loved one participate in social opportunities like Alzheimer’s events or respite services to thrive in respective ways.
- You and others close to your loved one practice healthy communication skills.
Vocational Wellness
The Vocational dimension of wellness is the satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from offering, developing, and exercising one’s skills and talents in any activity. Vocational wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- Loved ones attend occupational therapy to establish exercises and living adjustments that promote independence.
- You delegate simple, familiar tasks and chores around the house that your loved one can contribute to.
- You identify a regular job or volunteer opportunity that relates to your loved one’s skills or daily routine, such as watering plants in the community garden and greeting visitors at the welcome desk.
Intellectual Wellness
The Intellectual dimension of wellness involves engaging in creative pursuits and intellectually stimulating activities to keep minds alert and interested. Intellectual wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- You adjust games and activities to your loved one’s current cognitive level, such as sorting objects.
- You have your loved one focus on reminiscing or enjoying familiar things instead of trying to learn something new.
- You promote activities that stimulate the mind, such as music and drawing.
Emotional Wellness
The Emotional dimension of wellness represents the importance of maintaining balance in life, managing stress levels, and finding joy and fulfillment every day. Emotional wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- Loved ones follow a healthy daily routine that works for their personality and needs.
- You provide opportunities to engage with the senses to practice grounding techniques and enjoy the memories they inspire.
- You validate feelings instead of correcting facts.
Spiritual Wellness
The Spiritual dimension of wellness focuses on being connected to something greater than yourself and adhering to values that guide your actions. Spiritual wellness activities are most accessible and engaging when:
- Loved ones connect with nature, spend time outdoors, or even take on a garden project.
- Loved ones participate in familiar spiritual practices, such as singing hymns and attending regular worship services or workgroups.
- You ask your congregation about shortened or adapted services for those with memory impairments.
